At a recent private event, Gautam Adani, the Chairman of Adani Group, spoke up about his life to a group of young entrepreneurs. Adani recovered from a vicious attack by Hindenburg Research in January of last year in less than a year. Adani told the story of how India’s economic liberalization launched him on an exciting entrepreneurial journey, how he grew his modest export business into a conglomerate, and how he frequently failed but got back up after it. He made these remarks during an event hosted by the Young Presidents Organization (YPO).

1. Challenges bring pain; success brings gains.

Reflecting on his personal experience with accusations from Hindenburg Research and the subsequent decline of his company’s stock, Gautam Adani emphasized that success inevitably comes with its share of challenges and critics. “Every setback comes with its own set of difficulties, but every recovery brings its rewards. This reward is known as resilience. In the resilience game, your mind serves as both the battleground and the tool,” he explained.

Despite attempts by Hindenburg to undermine his business, Adani’s group remained steadfast, focusing on its core operations. “This experience strengthened our belief in our resilience. Our ability to recover underscores the importance of bouncing back, exemplifying the spirit of rising stronger after each setback,” he noted.

2. Handling intricacy

Adani stated that although the idea of simplicity is often accepted, the world in which we live is complex. What will set you apart is your capacity to handle complexity. Every company he founded, he claimed, turned out to be far more intricate than he had predicted. It was only because he could better embrace complexity that he was able to set himself apart from others.

Adani gave two examples of his embrace of complexity: constructing the world’s largest renewable energy park in record time, spanning 750 sq. km. and producing 30 GW of green energy; and taking on the most intricate and extensive slum reconstruction project in the world, at Dharavi.

3. Local models

According to Adani, a rapidly developing India needs a flexible strategy that is based on local models rather than just models derived from specialization and core skills. The key to strategic difference is frequently realizing the limitations of Western-centric frameworks and bookish knowledge. Although it’s vital to draw inspiration from books and other literary works, remember that they are only the perspectives of talented storytellers with enormous power,” the speaker stated.

Adani said that he used strategic adjacencies rather than any theoretical methods to grow his company. It was a smooth shift across a range of industries, from coal trading to port expansion to power generation to power transmission to distribution networks. And he didn’t stop there. He also expanded into data centers and other cutting-edge technology sectors, as well as power-intensive industries, and he also dabbled in LNG and LPG.

4. Getting misunderstood

Adani said that resilience frequently involves enduring criticism. “As you rise higher, you’ll need to be more prepared to handle criticism. Instead of letting it hinder your progress, you should be ready to be misunderstood and remain resilient,” he advised. He referenced his Carmichael coal mine project in Australia, which encountered significant opposition from various groups. “However, it was my strong belief in the project’s importance for strengthening India’s energy security that fueled my determination and readiness to face the criticism,” he shared.

5. Stay humble.

According to Adani, humility is frequently pushed back by success. However, the greatest differentiator you can cultivate is humility. He stated, “Humility means thinking of yourself a little less, not less of yourself.” True leadership lies in acknowledging your achievements without letting them overshadow the value of self-awareness.”
